Bunsen Burner Day Burns Bright

Learning to Lab Safely

Celebrate a staple in all chemistry labs~ the Bunsen burner! Bunsen burner day (3/31) celebrates the inventor of this laboratory equipment, Robert Wilhelm Eberhard von Bunsen. This equipment that produces a hot flame using flammable gas is a precursor to the gas stove used in homes today! This standard tool in chemistry can create a hazard if lab safety is not practiced. So, as we celebrate this invention, we should also look at safe laboratory practices! This site includes an interactive lab safety tutorial. Here students can explore what to wear, safe practices, emergency scenarios, and take a quiz on their knowledge.
